"Tamarack Tableau" Fine Art Photograph
Tamarack Tableau Print

Trees:  deciduous and coniferous, right?  Broadleaf and evergreen.  The former lose their leaves in the fall while the latter keep their needles year-round... except in the case of the tamarack (pictured) and other members of the larch family, which are deciduous conifers.  These guys not only lose their needles, those needles change colour in the fall like the leaves of other deciduous trees.  While the colours in this picture are somewhat enhanced, the low sun did the bulk of the work to showcase this little “family”.

It is interesting to note that in the 1930s, a “clever” Nazi decided to plant some larches in amongst the forest pines near the village of Zernikow, northeast of Berlin.  In the fall and only from the air, the swastika-shaped layout of the trees stood out against the dark green of the pines because of the colour change.  It wasn’t until the mid-90s that the reunified German government made an effort to obscure the symbol by selectively removing larches.  Since removing all of them would have left a negative pattern, the choice of trees to cut became a challenge and some have suggested that the loggers weren’t entirely successful.

For more information about larches, have a look at this article that appeared in the Orillia (Ontario) Packet & Times:
